Documentary A Time to Ride premieres at UIS

October 8, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois premiere of A Time to Ride, a documentary about the cross-country bicycle trip of two married lesbian grandmothers, will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 14, in conference room G, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  Hosted by the University of Illinois Alliance and Students Against Sexual Stereotypes and Inequality, the film is free and open to the public.

In the spring of 2003, Carrie and Elisia Ross-Stone, also known as the Rainbow Grannies, began a series of bicycle trips across America as a way of raising awareness and gaining support for equal civil marriage rights. Eventually they pedaled 3,100 miles, from San Francisco to New York City. Along the way they held press conferences, led bike meets, met with elected officials, and spoke to local gay and lesbian groups. They were greeted by reactions ranging from cheers to protests to death threats. Their remarkable journey was captured by award-winning filmmaker Keith Wilson.

Allan Cook, associate professor of Teacher Education at UIS, said, “A Time to Ride is a love story about two women with courage and determination set against the backdrop of the gay marriage media frenzy and election-year politics.”

Co-sponsors of the event are the UIS Alliance, PRIDE IL, SASSI, ACLU UIS, Springfield PFlag, and Heartland MCC.
