UIS Women's Center to present program on ERA

October 14, 2003

SPRINGFIELD - The Women's Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present the program "The ERA Illinois Needs YOU!" from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, October 23, in conference room G in the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The event is free and open to the public and is in observance of National Day for Young Women's Activism, initiated 10 years ago at the Civil Liberties and Public Policy program at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Kirsten Curley, public information director of the ERA Illinois campaign, will review ERA history in Illinois and share information on what students can do to get the amendment ratified, in Illinois and in the nation, and why their help is needed. Her presentation coincides with a petition campaign organized by the UIS College Democrats with support from the Women's Issues Caucus. The event will also provide information on various lobbying and advocacy learning opportunities at UIS.

The ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) fell short of national ratification in 1982. Since that time, the ERA Illinois campaign has kept the amendment alive in the public eye and in the political process. Last spring, the amendment passed the Illinois House of Representatives by a vote of 76-41 and it is slated to come before the State Senate during the upcoming veto session.

Support for the event at UIS is provided by the Women's Issues Caucus, Women's Studies program, Office of Student Volunteers and Service Learning, and College Democrats. For more information, contact Lynn Otterson, Women's Center director, at (217) 206-7173. For more information, visit National Young Women's Day of Activism.
