SPRINGFIELD
– The University of Illinois at
Springfield chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, was
among 39 chapters nationally to qualify for recognition as a Model Chapter
during 2001-2002. This is the second year that these awards have been
presented.
The purpose of the annual program is to recognize and
reward chapters that consistently maintain outstanding records in a number of
criteria including membership inductions, chapter correspondence, and service
projects. Model chapters receive a check for $100 and a certificate noting
their achievement. Other Illinois chapters to be recognized were those at the
University of Illinois at Chicago, Northern Illinois University, and Trinity
International University.
Psi Chi was founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging,
stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the
science of psychology. Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate men and
women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests. Psi
Chi is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association and the American
Psychological Society. There are 975 chapters at colleges and universities
across the U.S.
The
UIS chapter was founded in 1990. Laura DaCosta, assistant professor of
Psychology, and Karen Kirkendall, associate professor of Psychology, serve as
chapter advisers. Thirty-five new members were inducted last spring.
