SPRINGFIELD – “Broken Chalice,” new works by Mike Miller, assistant professor
of Visual Arts at the University of Illinois at Springfield, will be on display
at the UIS Visual Arts Gallery from October 21 to November 13. An opening
reception with the artist is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, in the
gallery. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
This recent series of paintings and
drawings uses the image of the chalice, or holy cup, as its point of departure.
Emulating the wire-frame techniques and fragmentation of early computer
modeling, the works display a fading icon in various stages of pixilated decay.
Miller explains, “On reflection, these
incomplete transmissions become symbolic of an individual’s struggle for
self-definition and self-expression against an increasingly pervasive mass
media. It strikes me that we are all somewhat incomplete ... partial
constructions of ideology, emotion, fashion, and fantasy.”
Miller, who joined the UIS faculty this
fall, teaches painting and drawing. He earned a B.F.A. from Texas Christian
University and an M.F.A. from the University of Michigan.
The Visual Arts Gallery is located in
room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Hours are 11
a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For more information about the exhibit
or the gallery, call (217) 206-6506.
