UIS and Lincoln Library sign reciprocal borrowing agreement

SPRINGFIELD -- The University of Illinois at Springfield and the City of Springfield have entered into a reciprocal borrowing agreement between Lincoln Library, Springfield’s public library, and UIS’ Brookens Library that is designed to enhance library services to the entire Springfield community. The agreement became effective October 1.

Under the terms of the agreement, signed by Mayor Karen Hasara and Chancellor Richard Ringeisen, both public library patrons and members of the UIS community will have greater access to the resources of either institution. All current UIS students, faculty, and staff will be able to check out materials at Lincoln Library, and patrons of the city library will have similar privileges at Brookens.

Jane Treadwell, university librarian and dean of library instructional services at UIS, noted, “This agreement offers members of the campus community another choice to help fulfill, not only their educational and research needs, but also the equally important need that we all feel sometimes for a good, ‘fun’ book to read.”

She added, “Each library collection has different strengths and this new cooperative effort means a broader ‘virtual’ collection is available to both user groups.”

Nancy Huntley, director of Lincoln Library, agreed. “The opportunity to borrow books directly from the university’s collection will make it easier and faster for our customers to obtain the research material they want. By working together, we can meet our customers’ needs for leisure reading and for research.”
