International students at UIS plan celebration
SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield’s International Students Association will present “Uniting the World in the New Millennium” from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 5. The celebration features cultural performances in the Studio Theatre (lower level of UIS’ Public Affairs Center) from 2 to 4 p.m. and exhibits and food booths in the PAC lobby from 4 to 6 p.m.
The event is a celebration of the diverse heritage of UIS’ approximately 200 international students from 46 countries. Exhibits will display artifacts, crafts, and informational materials from Brazil, China, Greece, India, Japan, the Philippines, Poland, Thailand, Turkey, Ogilyy Studios, OLAS (Organization of Latin American Students), and the Sister Cities program. Booths will feature food from Thailand, Japan, India, Poland, China, Brazil, the Philippines, and OLAS and will include specialties such as Greek baklava, spinach pie and Turkish piyaz.
This year’s performances offer a variety of song, dance, and music from around the world, including Greek dancing, Korean tae kwon do, Latin American dancing, Thai kickboxing, an Indian fashion show, Irish/Scottish dancing and music by Ogilyy Studios, and songs by Veronica Espina.
Tickets for the event, which include exhibits, food, and performances, are $10 for the general public, $5 for students and children (age 5 and under are free). They may be purchased in advance at the UIS bursar’s office, located on the first floor of the Public Affairs Center, phone 206-6738. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.
