  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UIS to present original play, “Degrees of Lucky”

November 11, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – “Degrees of Lucky,” a one-act play by Judith Schlessinger Dyer, will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday, November 28, in the Studio Theatre, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  This readers’ theater presentation is free and open to the public.

The play tells the story of Beth and Lucy, two breast cancer survivors who correspond by e-mail for two years, then decide to get together the evening before a “race for the cure” in New York City.  A brief question-and-answer session and a reception will follow the performance.  Note: The play contains some graphic dialog and is recommended for mature audiences.

Dyer, who died on November 6, 2005, had battled a recurrence of her own breast cancer over the past two and a half years after being cancer-free for nearly six years. She wrote “Degrees of Lucky” some three years ago in a UIS playwriting class, but had shared it with only a close personal friend until a few months ago when, still strong enough, she joined the “no-name-writers group,” which meets at the home of UIS English Professor Emerita Jackie Jackson. The reading at UIS will be its first public performance.

Readers/Cast: Missy Thibodeaux-Thompson (director/Lucy), Linda Castor (Beth), Brad Hammond (Bartender/Tom), and David Logan (Ralph).

Co-sponsors of the event are the English and Women’s Studies programs at UIS. For more information, contact Leslie Rachel Reliford, Women’s Studies graduate assistant, at 206-8205.
