UIS Fall Music Showcase to feature four ensemblesNovember 3, 2004SPRINGFIELD - The UIS Fall Music Showcase, featuring four musical ensembles, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 19, in the Studio Theatre at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The Studio Theatre is located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. Tickets for the program are $5 and all proceeds will benefit the UIS Music Student Scholarship Fund, which will present its first awards during this event.
“The concert should be an enjoyable evening of musical entertainment for the whole family,” said UIS music professor Sharon Graf. “We have a number of community musicians in all our groups,” she added, “so if anyone is interested in joining next spring, we encourage them to come and see what we have to offer.” Featured groups are the UIS Band, Chamber Ensemble, World Percussion Ensemble, and Chorus. This concert represents the work that each group has done since the fall semester began in August. Under the direction of Brian Pryor, also a member of local jazz band Razin’ Kane, the band will perform selections from both its pep band and concert repertory. The chamber ensemble -- 13 string musicians and an oboist -- will perform selections ranging from Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” to the lighter “Jingle Bell Hoedown.” The percussion ensemble, under the direction of UIS faculty member Doug Marshall and local artist Dennis Maberry, will perform several hand-drum selections. The chorus, directed by Graf, will sing a variety of arrangements, including one featuring a Latin beat with string and band musicians accompanying, a Bach chorale, and a special Thanksgiving song. A live webcast of the concert will also be broadcast on the UIS website at www.uis.edu. For more information, contact Graf by phone at 206-6570 or by e-mail at graf.sharon@uis.edu. |
