WUIS (91.9 Springfield) and WIPA (89.3 Pittsfield) will celebrate Thanksgiving with a special two-hour holiday program, “Giving Thanks: A Celebration of Fall, Food, and Gratitude,” to be broadcast at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 22.
“Giving Thanks” combines classical music and spoken word in a thoughtful reflection of the holiday. Segments include Keats’ “Ode to Autumn” read by actor Patrick Stewart; a witty Thanksgiving blessing from Michael Feldman, host of NPR’s Whad’ya Know?; words of poet Wendell Barry shared by Sound & Spirit host Ellen Kushner; a recitation of the elegant poem “Gift” by its author, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin; and a reflection on voluntary simplicity by Katy Butler; plus new material from significant contemporary writers including Donald Hall and Bill Holm.
The program will also feature a rare recording of actor Charles Laughton recounting a personal story connecting his own discovery of Chartres Cathedral with an excerpt from Jack Kerouac’s “The Dharma Bums” and the 104th Psalm into a moving tale that gives thanks for the discovery that art connects us all to a greater creative spirit.
