Twenty-three UIS students inducted into counseling honor society

May 3, 2004

SPRINGFIELD -  Twenty-three students in counseling programs at the University of Illinois at Springfield were inducted into Sigma Sigma Upsilon, the campus chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for counseling students, professionals, and educators, during ceremonies held as part of the organization’s Annual Banquet, Friday, April 30, at UIS.  Twelve graduating student members also received honor cords and officers were inducted for the coming year.

Dr. Nancy Sherman, president of the International Chi Sigma Iota Society, was guest speaker at the event, which was attended by more than 100 people and also observed April as Counseling Awareness Month. 

Inductees included Courtney Bailey, Janet Baird, Gail Beard, Robyn Beck, Brianne Blout, Patricia Burwell, Richard Chiola, Karen Guthrie, Brandy Hager, Lindsay Hager, Tracy Howland, Doris Jackson, John McGlathery, Janice Miller, Sarah Schroyer, Jason Steele, Brooke Taylor, Marisa Thurman, Sarah Triplett, Tina Vernor, Sue Waller, Kristen Yazell, and Katie Zinn.

Graduates receiving honor cords were Karen Guthrie, Krishell Hadsell, Timeka Hayes, Paula Herget, Ronald Johnstone, Pat Morgan, Angela Pitts, Victoria Risley, Tricia Russell, Margo Wagoner, Sari Wancket, and Jill Wright.

Newly elected chapter officers are Tavia Ervin, president; Tricia Burwell, president-elect; DeAnn Nix, vice president; Julie Baker, secretary; and Mollie Gust, treasurer.

Sherman, founding and current director of the Counseling Research and Training Clinic, has been a professional counselor at Denison University, The Women’s Tri-County Help Center, Inc., CompDrug, Inc., and in private practice. She was recently awarded a Fulbright Lecturing Award to teach social work courses at the Higher School of Social Work and Social Pedagogy “Attistiba” in Riga, Latvia. Her most recent articles appear in The British Journal of Counseling and Development among other publications.

Counseling Awareness Month is sponsored each April by the American Counseling Association and the Illinois Counseling Association as a method of educating the public about the role counselors play in helping individuals live healthier, happier, and more productive lives. It encompasses mental health counseling, pastoral or spiritual counseling, marriage counseling, job and business counseling, educational counseling, and genetic counseling.

The Illinois Counseling Association is a not-for-profit, professional and educational organization dedicated to the growth and enhancement of the counseling profession. Founded in 1948, ICA has a long history of supporting professional counselors in the state.

Chi Sigma Iota was established at Ohio University in 1985 and is designed to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the counseling profession.
