UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present “Color Me Skeptical: New Works by Chris Britt”March 28, 2006
SPRINGFIELD – “Color Me Skeptical: New Works by Chris Britt” will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from April 3 through April 21. The gallery will host an artist’s discussion beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21; a closing reception will follow from 6 to 7 p.m. The artist’s discussion, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public. Britt, locally acclaimed and nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for the State Journal-Register in Springfield, switches gears in this exhibit by showcasing abstract paintings that explore a range of emotions. As an editorial cartoonist, Britt has made of habit of “visually venting and prodding people to react…to see more clearly and feel more deeply.” In that same spirit, he employs his paintbrush “as a partisan weapon,” using bright colors, structure, textured forms, and thickly applied paint to evoke a sense of tension, movement, and energy.
Britt’s cartoons are syndicated by Copley News Service, which distributes his work to over 400 newspapers around the country. They have also appeared in Newsweek, Newsweek Japan, Time Magazine, U.S. News and World Report, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today. Britt is a 2003 graduate of the UIS Visual Arts program. The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For further information, contact Lara Stremsterfer by phone at 206-6506 or by e-mail at visarts-ga@uis.edu. |
