SPRINGFIELD – “The Administrator,” a critically acclaimed mixed-media installation by Michael Aurbach, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from March 6 through March 30. A closing reception is scheduled for Thursday, March 30, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the gallery. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

Described as “humorous, and expertly crafted,” "The Administrator" (2001) is a life-sized room within a room, made of reflective, galvanized steel, lit from above, and mocking an office space. Dorothy Joiner, writing in the November 2001 issue of Sculpture magazine, called the piece a satire of the “defensive, autocratic mentality of the person in charge.”

Aurbach is a professor of fine arts at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. "The Administrator" is part of the ongoing Secrecy Series that he began in 1993. Installations in this series address various ways in which modern men and women have lost privacy and are subject to constant monitoring by surveillance technology.
