UIS to hold Seventh Annual Health Fair

March 28, 2005

SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois at Springfield will host its Seventh Annual Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, in the concourse and conference rooms on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Sponsored by UIS’ Campus Health Services, the fair is held in conjunction with National Public Health Week, which this year focuses on the theme “Prevent, Protect, and Plan: Empowering Americans to live stronger, longer.”

CHS Director Lynne Price explained that this year there will be about 25 booths, each with an interactive feature.

A special event will be a presentation on Migraine Headaches by Dr. Cara Vasconcelles from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. in PAC conference room H. Refreshments will be served. The program is sponsored by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.

Scheduled Health Fair participants and their activities include: American Heart Association (Red Dress Campaign); BJ Grand Salon and Spa (massage); Body Care Associates, Inc. (balance, functional training); Central Illinois Community Blood Center (sign up for the April 25 campus blood drive); Central Illinois Hearing and Speech, LTD (hearing tests conducted by Dr. David Groesch, audiologist); Classic Touch School of Therapeutic Massage (massage); Fit Club (body fat measurement); Illinois Department of Public Health (presentation by the Office of Health Promotion); Lincoln Land Community College Department of Nursing (blood pressure screening); Memorial Medical Center (glucose and cholesterol screening Note: Participants must fast - nothing by mouth for two hours prior to this test.); St. John’s Hospital Cancer Institute (wellness program); Sangamon County Department of Public Health respiratory/asthma screening); SARA Center (HIV screening); Solei Dyment (mouth rinse samples); Springfield Clinic (prostate and testicular exams conducted by Dr. David Lieber, urologist); Springfield Vegetarian Association (vegan cooking with free samples; Triangle Center (breathalyzer test, substance abuse); UIS Counseling Center (substance abuse); UIS Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (health issues facing the black community); and UIS Women’s Center (interactive computer screening on domestic violence).

In addition, Café Panini and the American Heart Association will provide free samples of “heart healthy foods” including sandwiches, chicken caesar salad, and teas and other healthy drinks.
