UIS Women’s Center to present “Images of Women in Iran”

March 24, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Women’s Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present the photographic exhibit “Images of Women in Iran” by Azita Ziaei Monday, April 5, through Friday, April 16, in the MacDonald Lounge, located in Brookens Library on the UIS campus.

On Thursday, April 8, an artist’s reception will begin at 5 p.m. in the lounge and a discussion with Ziaei and UIS Professor Emerita Judy Everson will follow from 6 to 7 p.m. The reception, program, and exhibit are free and open to the public.

During the program, Ziaei will discuss her photos of women in Iran and Everson will discuss the bestselling book Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi.

Ziaei’s photographs have appeared in exhibits in Iran, Canada, and Sweden as well as in the U.S.  She began working as a photographer and graphic artist for local theaters and magazines while a student at Iran’s Azad University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in photography.  She then moved to Canada and in 1999 received an associate of arts degree in new media design at Centennial College, Toronto. In Toronto, Ziaei continued to work for theatrical companies and did commercial portrait work. Married to UIS assistant professor Amir Parssian and the mother of a one-year-old daughter, she currently specializes in freelance black-and-white work under the business name Azi Creations.

This exhibit, reception, and program are sponsored by Friends of Brookens Library and the UIS English Program and Women’s Center.  For more information, call the center at 206-7173.
