UIS presents discussion of juvenile justice

March 15, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Criminal Justice department and the Institute for Legal, Administrative, and Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present “The Continuing Cycle of Juvenile Justice,” a guest lecture by Dr. Thomas J. Bernard, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in conference room D, located on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The program is free and open to the public.

Bernard is a professor in the Crime, Law, and Justice program at Pennsylvania State University whose research interests include juvenile justice, criminal justice theory, and criminology.  His 1992 classic text The Cycle of Juvenile Justice analyzes the history of juvenile justice over the last two hundred years, showing how policy has gone through cycles of reform, advocating either lenient treatments for juvenile offenders or a “toughening up” process, neither of which has resulted in significant improvement in the treatment of delinquency. He is also the co-author of Theoretical Criminology, Life without Parole: Living in Prison Today, Behind a Convict’s Eyes: Doing Time in a Modern Prison, and A Life for a Life: Life Imprisonment: America’s Other Death Penalty.

Funding for this event was provided by the Institute for Legal, Administrative, and Policy Studies and the UIS Speakers’ Awards Committee.  For more information, contact the Institute at 206-6343 or Criminal Justice at 206-6301.
