March 4, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The Global Experience Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield is offering area residents a number of opportunities to spend part of the summer studying abroad, in subjects ranging from community work in Jamaica to Chinese ceramic art to excavating prehistoric sites in Germany.  Except as noted, the programs listed below are open to the public and to students from other universities as well as to UIS students.

Application deadlines and costs vary by program. To receive academic credit from UIS, regular tuition and fees and registration deadlines also apply.

May 16 - June 6. Together, the group will explore concepts of development, culture, communication, values, education, and sociology. Cost: $1,700 (includes airfare; does not include UIS tuition). Sign up by April 15.

The itinerary also includes the Great Wall, Pan Jia Yuan Antique Market, and the 1,000-year celebration of Chinese porcelain in Jingdezhen. The final stop will be Shanghai, for the International Ceramic Exhibition. The seminar will be led by Bob Dixon, professor emeritus of Visual Arts, who has toured China extensively and has participated in four international exhibitions. June 14-July 3.
