UIS announces new University Librarian
SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois at Springfield has announced the appointment
of Jane B. Treadwell as University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional
Services, pending approval of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
Treadwell, an accomplished library administrator, is currently Director of
the Office of Program Assessment and Coordination at Emory University, Atlanta,
Georgia. Throughout her 14-year career at Emory, she progressed through the
ranks of the professional librarian with a particular emphasis in collections.
She began as Director of Collection Management in 1988, was named Director of
Collections and Technical Services in 1990, and assumed her current position
in 2001.
"We are very pleased to have attracted an individual with such an impressive
record of accomplishments," said UIS Provost Michael Cheney. "Jane
Treadwell has extensive experience in collection development and management,
technical services and teaching. She will bring just the right mix of skills
and knowledge to the position here at UIS."
At Emory, Treadwell led a new program that assesses the librarys services,
coordinates services for target market groups, and integrates results of research
and development efforts into operations. She also displayed excellence in teaching
undergraduates, graduates and library personnel. In addition to assuming leadership
of Brookens Library at UIS, she will also hold faculty rank as an associate
professor in the Library Instructional Services program.
Before going to Emory, Treadwell was head of the Resource Development Division
of the Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M University. She also spent
six years at University of Florida Libraries in positions pertaining to monograph
acquisitions and cataloging.
She is the author of a chapter in a nationally acclaimed library textbook and
contributor of articles to well-regarded journals such as The Acquisitions Librarian
and College & Research Libraries.
She has a masters degree in library science from Florida State University
and a bachelors degree in history from Furman University.
Treadwell succeeds Edward Wass, who retired in 2001 after serving seven years
as UIS head librarian and dean of the library.
Brookens Library supports the curricula at UIS with a collection of 520,000 volumes, 2,200 periodical subscriptions, 3,000 films and videotapes, and 1,800,000 microforms. Faculty in the library support the information needs of each degree program at UIS.
