SPRINGFIELD -- WUIS (91.9 Springfield) and WIPA (89.3 Pittsfield) will host a contest to showcase some of central Illinois’ best young classical music talent this fall. Selected performers will be invited to take part in a live concert to be held on the evening of November 8 at the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield. The deadline to enter the pre-concert contest is Sunday, September 15.
Young musicians aged up to their senior year in high school (fall 2002) who would like to perform in a public concert, compete for cash prizes, and have their performance broadcast on WUIS-WIPA can access the contest rules and application form by calling (217) 206-6516 or visiting www.wuis.org.
All entrants will be asked to audition by submitting a cassette tape. A panel of judges will listen to the tapes and select soloists and groups to perform at the concert this fall. During the live concert, the judges will determine the best performance in each of the following categories: Best Senior Soloist (with or without accompanist), Best Ensemble (three to five members), and Best Junior Soloist (with or without accompanist).
Musical selections must be between five and 12 minutes in length. All performers must currently be studying their instruments and a written recommendation from a current music teacher must accompany all entries. Finalists will be notified by WUIS-WIPA.
Funds for the concert are provided by the Meredith Foundation.
