UIS to offer Master’s Certificate in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland SecurityJuly 26, 2006SPRINGFIELD -- The Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield will offer a Master's Certificate in Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security beginning this fall.
The certificate consists of 20 hours of coursework divided among three required courses in environmental risk assessment, risk management and communication, and program evaluation, plus two electives chosen from criminal justice, environmental studies, legal studies, public administration, and political studies. Sharron LaFollette, chair of the Department of Environmental Studies, said that the course schedules are designed to accommodate working professionals who are interested in obtaining an advanced professional credential. Certificate coursework may also be credited toward a master's degree in Environmental Studies at UIS. The new program joins the department’s existing Master's Certificate in Environmental Risk Assessment -- a 16-hour certificate including 12 hours of risk assessment coursework and a class in environmental economics. LaFollette said that the department's master's degree in Environmental Sciences with an option in Risk Science also recently received full accreditation by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council. She noted that a degree from an EHAC-accredited program is becoming a requirement in an increasing number of career paths in environmental health. Registration for UIS' 2006 fall semester, which runs from August 21 through December 16, is ongoing. For additional information about advanced study in environmental studies, contact LaFollette by phone at 206-7894 or by e-mail at SLaFo1@uis.edu. |
