UIS student trustee gets official vote for first time

July 13, 2006

SPRINGFIELD - Governor Rod Blagojevich has for the first time designated the student trustee from the University of Illinois at Springfield an official voting member of the U of I Board of Trustees.  At today's meeting of the board in Chicago, Sarah Doyle became the first student trustee from UIS ever to be given official voting rights.

Doyle, from LaGrange Park, was elected by the UIS student body this spring to serve as student trustee on the board for the 2006-07 academic year. She is pursuing a bachelor's degree in political studies and will graduate in December. She will then begin work on a master's degree in public administration at UIS.

"I am deeply honored to be serving as student trustee from UIS and feel very privileged to now have voting rights as well," Doyle said. "I could not have imagined that I would be the first trustee from UIS to have the vote. This year will be one of the most challenging and exciting of my life."

Each of the three U of I campuses elects one student trustee to serve on the board each year, and the governor designates one of the three as a voting member.  In the past, the designation has always been to either the Urbana or Chicago trustee.

"The designation really elevates UIS to a new level," said Chancellor Richard Ringeisen.  "In both a symbolic and literal sense, UIS will now be viewed as being a full partner with the other two campuses.  I couldn't be more pleased that Sarah will be the student serving as our trustee and casting votes on behalf of students across all three campuses."

Doyle began her studies at UIS as a freshman in the Capital Scholars Program in fall 2003.  She served as secretary of the Student Government Association during the past year and as student representative to the UIS Campus Senate.  She has also served on the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee, Student Web Advisory Committee for Enrollment, Campus Strategic Planning Committee, and as a Student Ambassador.

In fall 2005, Doyle participated in U of I President Joe White's Student Leadership Conference.

The U of I Board of Trustees is comprised of 13 members appointed by the governor for terms of six years and three student trustees who serve one-year terms. The governor serves as an ex officio member.

The University of Illinois at Springfield, one of three U of I campuses, is a small, public liberal arts university that offers 42 degree programs – 21 bachelor’s, 20 master’s, and the Doctorate of Public Administration. UIS has a special mission in public affairs and service and is known for extraordinary internships, a wireless campus, extensive online offerings, and a commitment to teaching.
