Book signing celebrates new book by UIS faculty member

January 18, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – A book signing and reception for Jason Pierceson, author of Courts, Liberalism, and Rights: Gay Law and Politics in the United States and Canada, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, January 27, in the third floor Atrium of the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The event is open to the public.

Pierceson is an assistant professor jointly appointed to the Political Studies and Legal Studies departments at UIS. His book, recently published by Temple University Press, guides readers through a discussion of liberalism, court rulings, and the progress that gays and lesbians have made in U.S. and Canadian courts and focuses on the interplay between law and politics on this issue.  In a discussion encompassing public law, comparative politics, political culture, liberal political theory, and institutionalism, Pierceson argues that courts do have the ability to affect social change, especially when a judiciary with broad interpretive powers encounters a political culture that endorses a set of rights that recognizes the inherent dignity and worth of every individual.

Pierceson came to UIS in fall 2005 from St. Norbert College, DePere, Wisconsin, where he taught courses in U.S. politics and government, judicial process and behavior, and constitutional and administrative law. He received his Ph.D. in Politics and Public Law from Brandeis University in 2003.

More information about Courts, Liberalism, and Rights is available at www.temple.edu/tempress/titles/1804_reg.html, or contact Pierceson at 206-7842.  For more information about the book signing, contact Diane Long in the Office of the Dean, College of Public Affairs and Administration, at 206-6523.
