UIS History Club to present “The Road to Brown”

SPRINGFIELD - “The Road to Brown,” a documentary about the legal strategy employed by the NAACP in its efforts to desegregate schools, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 10, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library at the University of Illinois at Springfield. Both the film and a question-and-answer session immediately following are free and open to the public.

The UIS History Club is sponsoring the event as part of the Illinois Humanities Council’s year-long focus on the 50th anniversary of Brown v Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that struck down the “separate but equal” doctrine for public schools in the United States. The local co-sponsor is the Central Illinois Regional Planning Committee of the Illinois Humanities Council.

Lionel Kimble, assistant professor of African American Studies at UIS, will moderate the discussion after the film.  Kimble was previously assistant to the director of the African-American Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has taught at Richard Daley College and Robert Morris College, both in Chicago, and at the University of Iowa. His teaching and research fields include U.S., African-American, and American social history, as well as 19th century European social and intellectual history. He earned the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., all in history, at the University of Iowa.
