Center for Entrepreneurship to be established at UIS

January 27, 2005

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IDCEO) announced today a partnership to establish a Center for Entrepreneurship that will be housed in the College of Business and Management at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

At the announcement in University Hall on the UIS campus, Chancellor Richard Ringeisen said he was pleased that UIS and the IDCEO have agreed to form this partnership.  Some of the details regarding the partnership must still go through formal processes at UIS before the center is fully implemented.

Representing Gov. Rod Blagojevich at the news conference, IDCEO Director Jack Lavin said the center will be established at UIS in an effort to continue promoting entrepreneurship and economic growth in the Central Illinois region. The center, the thirteenth to be opened since the governor took office, is part of his Opportunity Returns regional economic development strategy to create jobs in Illinois.

Ron McNeil, dean of the College of Business and Management, said the plan is for the center to foster business creation in the trade industry, assist regional business leaders, and support and mentor new entrepreneurs.

McNeil said the center will receive $50,000 in Challenge Grant funding and administrative support through the Opportunity Returns program operated by IDCEO. He noted that details, including staffing of the center, must be worked out before the center is fully functioning. "This will only enhance the resources that the business college has to offer its students and the region," McNeil said.

During the past two years, McNeil and several CBM faculty have participated with local partners in discussions about how to organize and add value to the "system" of supporting new business start-ups in the Central Illinois area. The partners include The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council for Springfield and Sangamon County, Lincoln Land Community College, Robert Morris College, Illinois Ventures for Community Action, Sangamon County Department of Community Resources, and City of Springfield Office of Planning and Economic Development.

The University of Illinois at Springfield, one of three U of I campuses, is a small, public liberal arts university that offers 42 degree programs – 21 bachelor’s, 20 master’s, and the Doctorate of Public Administration.
