Painting landscapes of Oregon and Ohio reminiscent of the Northern Baroque tradition, Mangubi uses 8-foot long two-by-fours as her medium, noting that they provide “just the right picture plane for the flat, sprawling landscape.”

Drawing her inspiration from the eclectic art that filled her childhood home in Moscow, she notes, “The scenes were quiet and devoid of luster or any saccharine sentiment. They may have been decorative and formulaic, but to a young painter growing up in a totalitarian society, they were glimpses of a perfect world the way a 17th century Dutch or Flemish master artist saw it.”

Currently associate professor of art at The College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, Mangubi teaches painting, drawing, and printmaking and has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. In spring 2004, she was an artist fellow at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France. Her works are represented in the public collections of institutions such as the Portland Museum of Art in Maine and the Kala Institute, Berkeley.

The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  For further information about the exhibit or the gallery, contact Emily Laverty at 206-6506 or by e-mail at visarts-ga@uis.edu.
