Auction will benefit UIS student delegation to Nicaragua January 21, 2004 SPRINGFIELD - A silent auction to benefit University of Illinois at Springfield students traveling to Nicaragua this spring will be held Monday-Wednesday, January 26-28, in the lower level concourse of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. The auction will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily; however, bid sheets and pictures of the items will be available after 8 p.m. Items to be auctioned include a hockey jersey, a fragrance gift basket from Bergner's, a candle basket from Pier 1 Imports, and several paintings. UIS students in the Global Experience Trip will be in Nicaragua from February 28 through March 7 as a delegation through Witness for Peace, a nonprofit organization working to fight poverty and oppression in Latin America and the Caribbean. While there, the students will meet with economists, U.S. embassy officials, and community organizers as well as everyday citizens, focusing on the impact of U.S. foreign policy. On their return, they will make community presentations about the experience. For the second year, Heather Dell, UIS assistant professor of Women's Studies, organized the trip and will accompany the students. In addition to the silent auction, the students are also sponsoring a raffle and selling t-shirts to raise funds for the trip. Grand prize in the raffle is a DVD player. Tickets are $5 for six or $10 for 13 and are available from any participating student. The t-shirts commemorate the trip and are available from any participating student for $10 each. For more information about the Global Experience trip or about making donations, contact Candi Clouse, graduate assistant in UIS' Women's Studies program, at 206-7459 or cclou01s@uis.edu.
