UIS Visual Arts Gallery to present new works by Australian artistJanuary 5, 2004SPRINGFIELD - "AGLOW," an exhibit of the latest drawings and paintings by Australian artist Michael Mark, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from January 15 through February 2. The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Thursday, January 15, beginning with a talk at 5 p.m., followed by a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public. Mark will present several new works based on his obsession with the transmission of light and illumination of objects. As natural outgrowth of this interest, Mark has collaborated with chemists, art historians, and fellow artists in an investigation of the painting techniques of Rembrandt, a master of light and shadow. This work was facilitated by a Netherlands America Fellowship awarded by the Fulbright commission. Mark has also participated in over 20 solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. He received his M.F.A. from Tufts University in 1995 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Melbourne. The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
