Sangamon Auditorium ClassPass makes performing arts more accessible to students

SPRINGFIELD – The Sangamon Auditorium adds a new educational outreach initiative to its traditional Class Acts programming with an $8 ClassPass ticket to many of its performing arts series events, beginning with the spring 2002 season.

Starting in February, K-12 school groups will be able to attend many performing arts series events for only $8 per ticket. The ClassPass program, made possible in part by the Helen Hamilton Performing Arts Endowment for Youth Fund, was developed as part of Sangamon Auditorium’s continuing efforts to develop new audiences for the performing arts.

“For years we’ve been searching for a way to offer significantly discounted tickets for K-12 teachers and students to all Sangamon Auditorium-sponsored events,” said John Dale Kennedy, auditorium director. “With the generous gifts and bequest of our benefactor, the Helen Hamilton endowment has provided a mechanism to finance this new classroom discount program.”

A teacher, school administrator, school group sponsor, or faculty advisor must purchase ClassPass tickets through an auditorium school account. There must be at least one teacher, school administrator, school group sponsor, or faculty advisor in attendance at the event.

This spring, the performances for which ClassPass tickets are available include: Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 9; the Peking Acrobats at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 2; Verdi’s opera Rigoletto at 8 p.m. Friday, March 8; Irish musicians Dervish and Karan Casey at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 16; Titanic the Musical at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, March 23; the Tony Award-winning play ART at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 30; and the Mingus Big Band at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26.
