New child care center director named at UIS
SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield has announced the appointment of Racquel Hamm as the new acting director of the UIS Child Care Center. Hamm brings experience and enthusiasm to her new position, according to Patricia Swatfager-Haney, vice chancellor for student affairs.
“My goal is to continue the high quality care and education that children receive here and to reach out to serve the children of UIS faculty, staff, and students,” said Hamm. She added, “I want to have fun in the process, too!”
Before Hamm’s appointment as a child development associate at UIS in 1999, she was a parent counselor at the Community Child Care Connection and a preschool teacher in Rochester for five years.
Hamm has an undergraduate degree in business management from Assumption College in the Philippines, an M.A. in health services administration from Sangamon State University, and director qualifications in early childhood education from Lincoln Land Community College.
Although the center primarily serves the children of UIS students, staff, and faculty, it also accepts children from the community. Day care is offered from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for children age 15 months to 5 years, after school from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children age 5 to 12 years, and evening care from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for children age 2 to 12. The center also offers the UIS Junior Scholars program for school-age children (completed kindergarten through age 12) during the summer months.
The center is taking applications for evening care now. There is a sliding fee scale available for families who qualify.
