UIS student paper wins awards at ICPA convention

February 21, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – Staff members of The Journal, the student newspaper at the University of Illinois at Springfield, received five awards at the 24th Annual Illinois College Press Association convention, held February 17 and 18 at the Holiday Inn City Centre in Chicago. Professional journalists and advertising professionals from throughout Illinois judged 1,700 entries from more than 30 college newspapers in the state.

Four of the Journal’s awards were in the open division, which included dailies and weeklies, and the fifth was in the weekly division for universities and colleges with enrollments of 4,000 or more.

In the weekly division, Journal editor-in-chief Heather Shaffer, assistant editor Stephanie Orr, Ashley Stoneking, Gabrielle Wiegand, and Mallory Medved, all members of the paper’s editorial board, won honorable mention for an editorial on proposed increases in housing fees.

Shaffer, Orr, and former layout and design editor Jenell Anderson won third place in the open division for a full-page advertisement they designed to promote the first issue of Beyond, a magazine supplement that debuted in spring 2005.

The fall 2005 edition of Beyond received honorable mention in the open category for special supplements.

Medved won honorable mention in the open division for critical reviews other than film for her review of comedian Gallagher’s performance at Sangamon Auditorium. Former Journal cartoonist Jason Stuebe received an honorable mention for his editorial cartoon depicting a proud and happy student on graduation day who realizes that now his college loans will have to be repaid.

This was the first time that Journal staff have placed in the critical review and editorial categories since 1999 and the first time ever that they have received awards in the special supplement, full-page advertisement, and editorial cartoon categories.

“I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Journal staff throughout the two years I have been editor,” said Shaffer. “I think the fact that we won five awards two years in a row demonstrates how hard this staff is willing to work to continue to improve the quality of our newspaper.”

UIS student publications adviser Debra Chandler Landis echoed Shaffer’s pride in the students’ achievements.

“The competition is tough,” said Landis. “In the open division The Journal competes against the smallest and largest colleges and universities in Illinois. In the competition involving weeklies at schools with enrollments of 4,000 or more, we’re up against the Buzz from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as well as newspapers from the U of I at Chicago, Loyola, DePaul, Columbia College, Northeastern Illinois University, and SIU-Edwardsville, among others.”

Each year the ICPA convention also includes workshops on a variety of journalism-related topics, a career fair, and a “photo shoot,” where student photographers work with professional photojournalists for an afternoon. Journal photographer Courtney Smith participated in this year’s photo shoot, which asked participants to take a series of photos in downtown Chicago demonstrating “chill.” Smith’s photos included a shot of a large wave breaking on Lake Michigan as temperatures hovered in the low teens.
