Expanding Your Horizons conference focuses on science, math, and technology careers for girlsFebruary 16, 2006SPRINGFIELD – “Expanding Your Horizons in Math, Science, and Technology” -- a hands-on conference designed specially for girls in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades -- will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturday, March 18, in the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The conference is presented by the American Association of University Women, Springfield Branch, and is sponsored by UIS and The Children’s Center, Memorial Health System. Many cutting-edge careers of the future will involve science, math, and technology and will be wide open to young women who are well-prepared. Participants at this conference will choose three sessions from more than 25 interactive workshops on topics ranging from webpage design to engineering, veterinary medicine, speech pathology, firefighting, television production, entomology, and forensic science. Each workshop will be led by a successful professional who will share information on what her job involves, how she became interested in the field, and what education and skills are required.
Workshops will also be available for parents and educators that will enable them to help their daughters and students make informed decisions as they approach college. Topics for these sessions include “What do College Admissions Committees Look For?” “Identifying and Addressing Obstacles to your Daughter’s Educational Success,” and “How to Keep Girls Motivated in School.” Advance registration is required. Cost is $10 for registrations postmarked before March 10 and $15 thereafter. Some scholarships are available. Additional support for the conference is provided by Commerce Bank, Girl Scouts of Land of Lincoln Council, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Detailed information, including a complete list of workshops and a registration form, are available online at www.aauw-il.org/springfield and www.mhcci.org.
