Scholarship available for UIS students with musical talent

SPRINGFIELD – University of Illinois at Springfield students with musical talent can now apply for the Suzanna Kay Shiner Scholarship, an award that will provide $1,000 to one student each year, whether they have previously participated in a campus music group or not.

The award is open to students of academic merit in any major. Recipients must enroll in one or more of the campus’ music ensembles (vocal or instrumental) each semester they hold the scholarship, which may be renewed.

UIS presently offers six musical groups -- UIS Chorus, Band, World Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, Native American Flute Circle, and Jazz Combo.

Interested students should submit a UIS Scholarship Application to the Financial Aid Office and should include in their narrative that they wish to be considered for the Suzanna Kay Shiner Scholarship. The deadline to submit the application is February 15. Auditions or sample performances can be arranged for a later date.

Suzanna Kay Shiner was the daughter of Larry Shiner, professor emeritus of Philosophy. At the time of her death in 2002, she was a sonar engineer with Search, Survey, and Recovery Inc. in Stuart, Florida, and a crew member of the survey ship Performer.
