UIS Career Center launches new online career system

February 1, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – The Career Development Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield has launched UIS-SUCCESS, a new online career system that allows students, alumni, faculty, staff, and potential employers to explore options in several career-related areas.  The system replaces and expands services offered through the X~plorer job posting site previously used by the center.

Using the new system, students can complete credential profiles and upload resumes for employers to search, as well as identify alumni and other professional mentors in the community. Students can also take advantage of job-shadowing experiences, informational interviews, community networking opportunities, and a new job agent feature that allows users to be automatically notified when positions meeting certain pre-selected criteria become available.

Employers can use the system to market company information, post internship and job opportunities, preview student/alumni profiles and resumes, and manage interview schedules.

First-time users must register with the system.

Tammy Craig, interim director of the Career Development Center, noted, “This expansion of online services comes just in time for the annual career fair. We encourage all students and alumni who are interested in attending the fair to register and upload their resume with UIS-SUCCESS now so that employers will have a chance to research a variety of candidates for their available positions.”

The Career Development Center provides a wide variety of services, including vocational assessments; career counseling; help in choosing a major and planning a career path; and advice on developing job search strategies, effective resumes, cover letters, job applications, and interviewing skills. Access to other web-based systems such as CareerSearch and Discover Career Guidance System is available. Staff regularly lead workshops on a number of topics and maintain credential files and current information and registration materials for the GMAT, GRE, LSAT, and the TOEFL. The center also houses a resource and employer literature library. Distance students can easily access all of these resources, including workshops which are presented dually in an on-campus and online format through Elluminate technology.

The CDC is located in room 50 of the Student Affairs Building on the UIS campus. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  For more information, contact the center by telephone at 217/206-6508 or go to www.uis.edu/careerservices.

Note: The Springfield Collegiate Career Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, February 17, in the Public Affairs Center at UIS.
