Expanding Your Horizons conference focuses on science, math, and technology careers for girls

February 18, 2005

SPRINGFIELD - “Expanding Your Horizons in Math, Science, and Technology” -- a hands-on conference designed specially for girls in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades -- will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, in the Public Affairs Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield. The conference is presented by the American Association of University Women, Springfield Branch, and is sponsored by UIS and The Children’s Center, Memorial Behavioral Health Group.

Many cutting-edge careers of the future will involve science, math, and technology and will be wide open to young women who are well-prepared. Participants at this conference will choose three sessions from among 20 interactive workshops on topics ranging from webpage design to engineering, veterinary medicine, speech pathology, computer gaming, video production, product development and marketing, archaeology, and forensic science. Each workshop will be led by a successful professional who will share information on what her job involves, how she became interested in the field, and what education and skills are required.

Workshops will also be available for parents and educators that will enable them to help their daughters and students make informed decisions as they approach college. Topics for these sessions include “What to Expect from the SAT and ACT Tests,” “Financing a College Education,” and “Choosing High School Courses to Keep Options Open for College.”

Advance registration is required and must be postmarked no later than March 5. Cost is $10 for those who register before March 1 and $15 thereafter. Some scholarships are available.

Additional support for the conference is provided by Arena Foods, Barnes and Noble, Chapman Erickson: Creative Enterprises, Girl Scouts of Land of Lincoln Council, Illinois Education Association, O’Reilly Media Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Detailed information, including a complete list of workshops and a registration form, are available online at www.aauw-il.org/springfield. More information can also be obtained by calling 217/793-0312 or 217/787-1285.
