New scholarship available for UIS students with musical talent

February 2, 2005

SPRINGFIELD - University of Illinois at Springfield students with musical talent can now apply for the Suzanna Kay Shiner Scholarship, a new award that will provide $1,000 to one student each year, whether they have previously participated in a campus music group or not.

The award is open to incoming, continuing, or graduate students of academic merit in any major; preference will be given to female students. Recipients must enroll in one or more of the campus’ music ensembles (vocal or instrumental) each semester they hold the scholarship, which may be renewed.

UIS presently offers five musical groups -- the Chorus, Band, World Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, and Native American Flute Circle.

Interested students should submit a UIS Scholarship Application to the Financial Aid Office by February 15 and should include in their narrative that they wish to be considered for the Suzanna Kay Shiner Scholarship.  Applicants are also invited to submit a sample of their performance (audio or video tape) or to audition.

Suzanna Kay Shiner was the daughter of Larry Shiner, professor emeritus of Philosophy. At the time of her death in 2002, she was a sonar engineer with Search, Survey, and Recovery Inc. in Stuart, Florida, and a crew member of the survey ship Performer.

For more information about the scholarship or to arrange an audition, contact Sharon Graf, director of music at UIS, at 206-6570. For information about scholarship applications, contact the Office of Financial Assistance at 206-6724 or go to www.uis.edu/financialaid/.
