UIS to host program commemorating Brown vs. Board of Education

February 27, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - Project Minority Student Support for Teaching at the University of Illinois at Springfield will sponsor a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus. Both the program and the reception immediately following are free and open to the public.

Project Director Loretta Meeks, professor of Teacher Education at UIS, and students in the program will host the event, which will consist of a reader's skit written by Meeks and directed by Marcellus Leonard, associate professor of English. The skit chronicles the events leading up to the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision that outlawed school segregation solely on the basis of race.

The skit will be followed by a panel discussion of attorneys representing the Black Attorneys’ Organization.

Project MSS is an effort to assist the Springfield and Decatur school districts with recruiting and retaining minority elementary and secondary teachers and is recognized as District 186’s primary recruitment initiative for African-American teachers.  In addition to UIS, project partners are Lincoln Land Community College and Springfield District 186.

For more information, contact Meeks at 206-7008.
