American Indian Dance Theatre returns to Sangamon Auditorium
SPRINGFIELD – After an engaging first performance in 1989, American Indian Dance Theatre will return at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 23, to the University of Illinois at Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium, sponsored by FAXXON Title Services. The performance will feature over 20 dancers, singers, and drummers, representing a variety of tribes, as they combine tradition with modern expression in celebration and storytelling.
For the past 12 years the American Indian Dance Theatre has been enthusiastically received by the press and the public and created a new level of awareness of American Indian culture. The company was a pioneer in bringing authentic traditional American Indian dance and music to the world, making it involving and exciting.
American Indian Dance Theatre has become the first company to successfully present traditional dances in a theatrical setting without sacrificing the integrity and meaning of the dances. So authentic is the work of the dance company that professional costume designers were not used for the stage production. Company members or their friends and relatives made all of the costumes.
A Pre-show Discussion & Questions session (PDQ), sponsored by Barnes & Noble, will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, PAC level 1. Dr. Jonathan Reyman, research associate from the Illinois State Museum will interview a dance company member.
Tickets are $24, 21, 19, and 12. Tickets can be ordered by calling the Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office, (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The auditorium administrative offices can be reached at (217) 206-6150 or by e-mail at onstage@uis.edu.
