Acoustic/alternative musician Magdalen Hsu-Li to perform at UIS

SPRINGFIELD — The Women’s Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield will present a performance by Magdalen Hsu-Li at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in the Studio Theatre, lower level of the UIS Public Affairs Center. The event, in celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s Heritage Month 2001, is free and open to the public.

Hsu-Li, a pioneer among Asian-American women in music, is a Seattle-based singer-songwriter in the acoustic/pop/alternative genre. Hsu-Li’s music represents a new, diverse and multicultural generation and ranges from ballads to political punk. Her high-energy live shows are consciousness-raising events featuring piano, drum set duos, impromptu standup, theater, poetry, and spiritually rousing percussion and drum improvisation.

Hsu-Li tours extensively on the college, acoustic, women’s, and Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgendered Pride circuits. In 1998, her single "Monkeygirl" from her Evolution release was nominated for a GLAMA award. In 1999, she performed in the Black-A-Palooza Tour, a national tour of African-American music featuring a multicultural lineup of major label and independent acts. Hsu-Li is the founder of the Femme Vitale women’s music and arts coalition and has established her own label, CHICKPOP Records.
