Kingston Trio bringing 40 years of folk music to Sangamon Auditorium

SPRINGFIELD - Formed in 1957 by Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard
with only acoustic guitars and banjoes, The Kingston Trio is still
touring nationally. Sponsored by Springfield Magazine, the group will
perform its unique "folk revival" music at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 9,
at the University of Illinois at Springfield's Sangamon Auditorium.
The Kingston Trio's three-part harmony and clean, crisp sound has earned
them two Grammy awards, numerous gold records, and hit singles including
"Tom Dooley," "MTA," "Greenback Dollar," and "Where Have All the Flowers
Gone."
As group member Bob Shane puts it, "There is a tremendous demand for our
type of acoustic music, and not just from those who remember The
Kingston Trio." Since the group's inception in 1957 the pop music scene
has changed dramatically, but The Kingston Trio was always there keeping
folk music alive. In addition to changes in pop music, the group has
survived several lineup changes over the years. Bob Shane is the only
remaining original member and actually owns the name Kingston Trio.
Shane is joined by new members Bob Haworth and George Grove. In spite
of the changing faces, the music remains the same.
A Pre-show Discussion & Questions session (PDQ), sponsored by Barnes &
Noble, will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, PAC level 1.
Tickets are $24, 21, 19 and 12. Tickets can be ordered by calling the
Sangamon Auditorium Ticket Office, (217) 206-6160 or (800) 207-6960,
between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The auditorium
administrative offices can be reached at (217) 206-6150 or by e-mail at
