UIS student receives University Professionals scholarship

December 1, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – Emma Hurley, a senior in the Capital Scholars program at the University of Illinois at Springfield, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the University Professionals of Illinois Local 4100.

Hurley, who received the UPI’s Margaret B. Schmidt Scholarship, is the daughter of Chuck and Janice Hurley of Auburn.  At UIS, she is majoring in Psychology, with a developmental concentration, and has been on the dean’s list for three semesters. She serves as student representative to the Psychology Program Committee, is president of the Psychology Club, and is an inductee and vice president of the campus chapter of the Psi Chi Honor Society. She hopes to eventually earn a doctorate in school psychology.

Hurley has taken part in UPI support activities on campus for three years. Her mother, Janice Hurley, has been employed at UIS for 15 years, for the past 10 years as secretary for the Psychology program. Her father, Chuck Hurley, retired from UIS in April 2005 after 32 years as a building service worker.

The UPI scholarship is a one-time award made in the spring semester to a new or continuing full-time student. Recipients must also have a family member who belongs to Local 4100, which includes staff at Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois University, Governor's State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, and UIS.

Margaret Schmidt was an active union leader for many years and established the award in her name to benefit family of fellow union members.
