UIS Alumni Association to host tour of wetlands restoration
August 31, 2006
SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will present a tour of Illinois River wetlands restoration sites on Saturday, September 16. The program is open to the public; however, reservations are requested.
Hosts for the tour will be Michael Lemke, UIS associate professor of Biology and director of the Emiquon field station near Havana, as well as other UIS faculty and alumni involved in the project, which is a collaborative effort of UIS and the Nature Conservancy.
Since late 2004, the Conservancy has been working to restore more than 7,000 acres of land along the Illinois River to its natural floodplain state. UIS established the Emiquon Field Station to study, research, and document the undertaking, one of the first large-scale efforts of its kind.
The program includes a hay wagon tour of the Spunky Bottoms restoration near Meredosia, guided by a Nature Conservancy ecologist; a brief tour of the Dickson Mounds State Museum; and a presentation/overview of the Emiquon project, and a trip to the site being restored.
Transportation and a box lunch will be provided. Participants will leave from the UIS campus at 8:30 a.m. and return by 5 p.m. Space is limited and reservations should be made no later than Friday, September 8.Cost of the program is $25 for Alumni Association members and their guests, retired UIS faculty/staff, and current UIS students; $35 for others.
