Taste of UIS lunchtime lecture series returns

August 31, 2006

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois Alumni Association at UIS will sponsor A Taste of UIS: Distinguished Faculty/Alumni Lunchtime Lectures – a series of three monthly presentations featuring distinguished UIS faculty and alumni – to be held at Maldaner's Upstairs, 222 South Sixth St., Springfield. The programs are open to the public; however, reservations are required.

The series will open on Wednesday, September 20, with "The American Way: Government-Industry Collaboration in the War on Terror." Alumnus Mark Cheviron, who is responsible for security functions at all of ADM' 1,100 locations in 70 countries, will discuss the effects that the shift in world conflict has made on private industry and in government-industry relationships, as well as on shared counterterrorism roles and intelligence partnerships. In addition to his position at ADM, Cheviron is also a member of the Executive Working Group of the U.S. Department of State Overseas Security Advisory Council.

The series continues on Wednesday, October 18, with "Politicians, Lobbyists, and Scallywags." Three veteran lobbyists will talk about what lobbyists do, how lobbying interfaces with the election process, and whether lobbyists have an unfair advantage over the needs of ordinary citizens in affecting public policy. The program will include time for questions from the audience.

On Wednesday, November 15, the topic will be "Today's Decisions, Tomorrow's Consequences: Challenges and Opportunities for Aging Boomers and Their Communities." What are the consequences for individuals, families, and communities as the first "baby boomers" turn 60? Carolyn Peck, UIS assistant professor of Human Services-Gerontology, will discuss the consequences for boomers who will thrive or struggle as a result of the adult lifestyle decisions that are being made now.

All three programs will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a hot buffet lunch. Cost for each is $20 per person, $15 for Alumni Association members and their guests. Make reservations no later than one week in advance of the event by calling Alumni Relations at (217) 206-7395, registering on-line at www.uiaa.org/spfld/, or e-mailing alumni@uis.edu.
