|FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE|
Auditions set for UIS’ 06-07 theater season
August 25, 2006
SPRINGFIELD – Audition schedules for the 2006-2007 season of the Theatre Program at the University of Illinois at Springfield have been set. Students, faculty, staff, and other members of the public are invited to attend and learn more about opportunities to get involved, both on stage and behind the scenes in such areas as stage managing, lighting, sound, costumes, and props.
All auditions will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. (actors are encouraged to arrive at 7) in the Studio Theatre, located in the lower level of the Public Affairs Center on the UIS campus. Auditions will consist of unrehearsed readings from the script and actors should dress comfortably. Pictures, resumes, and brief prepared monologues are welcome, but not required.
The season will feature three productions: Anton in Show Business by Jane Martin (November 3-5 and 9-11), As Bees in Honey Drown by Douglas Carter Beane (March 2-4 and 8-10), and Two Rooms by Lee Blessing (April 13-15).
The first production, Anton in Show Business, has been described as a 'savvy, savage backstage comedy," a "fast-paced and remorseless" look into the world of theater that brings a self-centered television actress, a jaded New Yorker, and an enthusiastic ingénue together for an ill-fated, (very-far) off-Broadway production of Anton Chekhov's The Three Sisters. Along the way, Martin manages to skewer producers, directors, actors, sponsors, and critics, as well as multiculturalism, while at the same time satirizing and celebrating theater as a modern art form. UIS Assistant Professor of Theatre Missy Thibodeaux-Thompson will direct. Auditions will be Sunday and Monday, September 10 and 11, with call-backs Tuesday, September 12, at 7 p.m. Rehearsals will begin Sunday, September 17, and will continue for approximately six weeks.
The second production, As Bees in Honey Drown, is a "dark comic mystery" about the search for celebrity. Set in Manhattan, Bees follows the trail of a mysterious socialite and a young author savoring the success of his first novel. As the woman attempts to lure him into writing her life story -- for a possible film -- the young man finds himself caught up in the whirlwind of fame, instant success, and things that are not always as they seem. UIS Director of Theatre Eric Thibodeaux-Thompson will direct. Auditions will be Sunday and Monday, November 12 and 13, with call-backs Tuesday, November 14, at 7 p.m. Rehearsals will begin Sunday, January 14, and will continue for approximately six weeks.
The third production, Two Rooms, a "Faculty/Student Showcase" that will feature the Thibodeaux-Thompsons performing alongside two students, will coincide with the Alumni Association's Arts Night at UIS. "Poetic, moving, relevant, and profound," Two Rooms is a hostage drama set in the Middle East that illuminates both the agony of the detained as well as the helplessness of those left behind. Guest director will be Leigh Steiner. Auditions will be Sunday and Monday, November 12 and 13, with call-backs Tuesday, November 14, at 7 p.m.
Scripts of the plays will be available for 24-hour checkout, with a $10 returnable deposit, from the Communication Program office in University Hall, room 3010, phone 206-6790. Scripts for Anton in Show Business are also available on reserve at Brookens Library.
