UIS First Week welcomes students back to campus

SPRINGFIELD – The University of Illinois at Springfield will welcome students to the fall semester with a variety of "First Week" events August 18 through 27.

All First Week events are free and will be held on the UIS campus. Valid UIS ID may be required to take part in some events.

UIS director of student life Cynthia Thompson said that First Week is a campus tradition designed to help both new and returning students "unravel the mysteries of college life."

"It's an exciting time when we try to provide all students with opportunities to meet new people, to participate in a variety of fun events, and to become acquainted with various locations and services available across campus," she said.

Focusing on the theme "CSI-UIS: Campus Scene Investigations," this fall's events include an Involvement Expo, an ice cream social, Camp Out on the Quad, the Chancellor’s Welcome Back Picnic, and open houses for a number of academic programs and other departments.

Friday, August 18

• Welcome Back Party with Karaoke, 9 to 11 p.m., Food Emporium, level one of the Public Affairs Center.
• Weekend at the Fair, a limited number of free admission passes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Student Affairs Building, room 20, through 5 p.m.

Saturday, August 19

• Exhibition Soccer Game – UIS vs. U of I club team, 7 p.m., Kiwanis Stadium.

Sunday, August 20

• Trip to Boulder Creek Fun Park, 2 to 5 p.m. Sponsored by Campus Recreational Sports. A shuttle will leave from the rec center in the Student Life Building (parking lot B) at 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Monday, August 21

• Brookens Library Scavenger Hunt, noon through 6 p.m. Start the hunt at any time throughout the afternoon by stopping by the Information Desk on the second level to pick up the questions.
• Student Life Welcome/Ice Cream Social, 4:30 to 6 p.m., University Hall lobby and Sangamon Auditorium lobby. Music by the Blue C.A.T. Trio.

Tuesday, August 22

• Involvement Expo, 5 to 6:30 p.m., Brookens Plaza. Get information about various campus services and student organizations.

Wednesday, August 23

• Chancellor’s Welcome Back Picnic, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., UIS Quad (rain location: Brookens overhang). Meet Chancellor and Mrs. Ringeisen as well as other administrators, faculty, and staff. Music by One Relm.

Thursday, August 24

• Student Life Plaza Festival, 4 to 6:30 p.m., east side of campus (food served 4:30 to 6 p.m.). Music by Love Apple.
• Movie: “Over the Hedge,” 8 and 10 p.m., Brookens Auditorium.

Friday, August 25

• Community Service Projects, 3 to 5 p.m., various locations including Big Brother/Big Sister, Cox Children’s Center, MERCY Communities, and Special Olympics.  Sign up for projects no later than noon, Thursday, August 24, at Lincoln Residence Hall front desk; in Student Affairs Building, room 60; or by contacting Mae Noll at mnoll1@uis.edu or Bukola Bello at cvc@llcc.edu. Transportation provided as necessary.
• Tailgate Party & Pack the Field, 5 to 7 p.m., basketball court next to Kiwanis Stadium. Sponsored by the Student Activities Committee and UIS Housing. Music by Egon’s Unicat. Free t-shirts available at the soccer field at 6:30 p.m. while supplies last.
• Soccer Game – UIS vs. University of St. Francis, 7 p.m., Kiwanis Stadium.

Saturday, August 26

• Volleyball Tournament, time TBA, UIS Gym.
• CSF Jell-O Olympics, 3 p.m. rec park across from Pennyroyal Court student housing. Sponsored by Christian Student Fellowship.

Sunday, August 27

• Intramural Kickball Tournament, 2 p.m., rec park softball field. Sponsored by Campus Recreational Sports.
