Thirty-nine new faculty join UIS
August 25, 2005
SPRINGFIELD – Thirty-nine new faculty members have joined the University of Illinois at Springfield for the 2005 fall semester. Sixteen will teach in programs within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; five will teach in the College of Public Affairs and Administration; nine in the College of Business and Management; five in the College of Education and Human Services; and four are members of the library faculty.
Apanard Angkinand, assistant professor of Economics, received her Ph.D. in economics from Claremont Graduate School in 2005. Her research focuses on the areas of monetary and financial economics as well as political economy and her recent research projects have involved policy analyses, including financial regulation and insolvency procedures.
Kimberly L. Armstrong, associate professor of Library Instructional Services and coordinator of collection development, received her M.S. in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991. She was a program officer at the Triangle Research Library Network in North Carolina for five years and is an expert in cooperative collection development and consortial license agreements.
Jason Barker, assistant professor of Psychology, earned a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Arizona in 2001. At UA he held a National Science Foundation graduate fellowship and was also a postdoctoral fellow. His research interests are in psycholinguistics, especially language processing. His teaching specialization will be in experimental psychology.
Leonard Bogle, assistant professor of Educational Leadership, received the doctorate in educational administration at Illinois State University in 2000. At UIS, he will teach primarily in the online Teacher Leadership master’s degree program. He has been a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent and has directed programs related to Chapter I, adult education, family literacy, and early childhood. His professional interests include technology in the classroom and cooperative learning with computers.
Donna Bussell, assistant professor of English, is a medieval specialist with a 2005 Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her research interests are in socio-political dissent as reflected in narratives of the lives of female saints. She also focuses on medieval science and medicine, reflecting a previous career as a nurse. She will begin her duties at UIS in January.
Glenn Cassidy, visiting assistant professor of Public Administration, received his Ph.D. in public policy analysis from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1990. His research and professional interests focus on fiscal and budgetary aspects of state and local governments as well as transportation and environmental policy.
Julie Chapman, assistant professor of Library Instructional Services, received her M.S. in library and information science from UIUC in 1998 and spent six years on the faculty at Valdosta State University in Georgia. Her research interests include librarian-faculty partnerships and library instruction in online courses.
William Cronin, visiting assistant professor of Accountancy, received his J.D. in 1986 from Washington University. He has six college degrees and previously worked for the IRS, Coopers & Lybrand (predecessor of Price Waterhouse Coopers), and Emerson Electric. He comes to UIS from private practices in both law and accountancy. His areas of special interest are law, taxation, and accounting.
Jeffrey Decker, assistant professor of Accountancy, received his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Arizona in 2001. He has developed an expertise in forensic accounting and is studying to become a Certified Fraud Examiner. Decker’s professional and research interests focus on accounting issues affecting managerial decision making.
Mollie Freier is associate professor and chair of Library Instructional Services. She received her Ph.D. in English from UIUC in 1984 and spent 14 years on the faculty at Indiana University East and Dakota State University before resigning to pursue an M.S. in library and information science at UIUC, which she completed in 1998. Her research interests include information anxiety, usability testing of library web sites, and information literacy in the detective novel.
Brian Gillis, assistant professor of Visual Arts, will teach courses in ceramics and sculpture. He earned the MFA from Alfred University in 2002 and previously taught at San Diego Mesa College. His solo exhibits include galleries in New York and California, and his work is represented in the American Museum of Ceramic Arts.
Michele Gribbins, assistant professor of Management Information Systems, is a Ph.D. candidate in information systems at UIUC. Her primary research interests center on the process and human factors associated with the adoption, usage, and impact of emerging technologies in enterprise environments.
Eric Hadley-Ives, assistant professor of Liberal Studies/Individual Option, comes to UIS from UIUC, where he was assistant professor of social work. He earned the Ph. D. in social work at Washington University in 2000. His professional interests include service learning and neighborhood influences on children and adolescents and he is involved in an ongoing neighborhood youth project in East St. Louis.
Neil Headman, assistant professor of Human Services, earned the Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy from the School of Social Work at Florida State University in 2003. At UIS, he will focus on the Child and Family Studies concentration within the Human Services program. He has taught social work courses at FSU, directed clinical services for Capital City Youth Services in Tallahassee, and provided in-home counseling to families at risk.
Tena Helton, assistant professor of English, is a specialist in American literature written before 1865 as well as in women and gender studies and English composition. She previously served as an assistant coordinator for large-section literature courses in English at Louisiana State University, where she completed her Ph.D. in American literature in 2005.
Joseph Huff, assistant professor of Management, received his Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from Northern Illinois University in 2000. Huff will primarily teach courses related to organizational behavior as well as research methods and statistics, organizational change and development, organizational theory, human resource management, employee behavior, and organizational culture.
Kathy Petitte Jamison, assistant professor of Communication, previously worked as a journalist, winning three Illinois Press Association awards for reporting on subjects ranging from economic development and the environment to the plight of a teenage high school drop out. Her professional and research interests include consumerism and presidential public relations. She is a Ph.D. candidate at UIUC.
Nithyakala Karuppaswamy, assistant professor of Human Development Counseling, earned the Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Studies at Purdue University in 2005. At UIS, she will teach primarily in the HDC program’s marriage and family therapy and community counseling concentrations. She has been a teaching assistant at Purdue, a lecturer at Mother Teresa Women’s University in Madras, India, and an addictions counselor and consulting psychologist. Her research and professional interests include the effect of psychological training on personality and the academic achievement of underachieving students.
Roxanne Kurtz, lecturer in Philosophy, is a Ph.D. candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and author of a forthcoming book titled Persistence: Contemporary Readings. Her teaching and research interests are in political theory, metaphysics, and feminist philosophy.
Ann Lampkin, assistant professor of Social Work and Human Services, is a Ph.D. candidate in Policy Planning, Administration, and Social Sciences at Clark Atlanta University. She will teach primarily within Human Services’ concentration in social services administration. She comes to UIS from the faculty of University of Detroit Mercy and has been a grant developer and program consultant, home therapist for families in crisis, and outpatient pediatric social worker.
Hao Ma, professor of Management, received his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the University of Texas-Austin in 1994. His professional interests focus on the nature and causes of the competitive advantage, cooperative strategy, entrepreneurship and strategy, and career advancement and management.
Mahdi Majidhi-Zolbanin, lecturer in Mathematics, is a Ph.D. candidate in Mathematics at the City University of New York. His research specializations are in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. He previously taught at the high school and college level in Iran and has been an adjunct lecturer at CUNY.
Jennifer Manthei, assistant professor of Sociology/Anthropology, brings a variety of international field and academic experiences to UIS. She earned the Ph.D. in Cultural and Medical Anthropology from the University of Arizona in 2004. Her areas of specialization include Latin American and gender studies. She has also worked in projects involving food security in Guatemala and Angola, and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.
Linda McCown is associate professor and director of Clinical Laboratory Sciences. She has more than 25 years of professional experience, first as a medical technologist and then as a teacher, most recently at the Jewish Hospital College of Nursing and Allied Health in St. Louis. She has served as associate director and chair of the Hematology Assembly of the Missouri Organization of Clinical Lab Science. She is pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where her research focuses on CLS pedagogy.
Ramona McNeal, visiting assistant professor of Political Studies, received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Kent State University in 2005. Her professional interests include political behavior and voting, public opinion, mass media, campaigns and elections, digital government, and telecommunication, health, and education policy.
Ronald Michaelson, visiting assistant professor of Political Studies and in the Center for State Policy and Leadership, received his Ph.D. in Government from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1970. His professional interests include Illinois campaigns and elections. He has been a political consultant and served as executive director of the State Board of Elections.
Brent Never, assistant professor of Public Administration, received his Ph.D. in Public Policy at Indiana University in 2005. His interests include organization theory and institutional change, mediating intergroup conflict, and policy formulation in the developing world.
Ratko Orlandic, associate professor of Computer Science, joins UIS’ teaching and research team on network security. He previously taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he was involved in an NSF-funded research project to develop a data engine for grid-enabled analytic computing. He earned the Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1989.
Jason Pierceson, assistant professor of Political Studies and Legal Studies, received his Ph.D. in Public Law at Brandeis University in 2003. His research interests focus on gay rights issues in law, policy, and political philosophy. He previously taught at St. Norbert College, DePere, Wisconsin.
Sheryl Reminger, assistant professor of Psychology, comes to UIS from the University of Arizona, where she also held positions as a postdoctoral fellow and an assistant research scientist. Her specialization is in neuropsychology, especially the effects of cancer treatments on neurological functioning. Her teaching includes courses on death and dying, clinical interviewing, and assessment. She earned the Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Arizona in 2001.
Janis Rose, visiting instructor in Computer Science, previously taught networking and security classes at UIS as an adjunct faculty member. She holds a master’s degree, numerous industry and state teacher certifications, and has been employed as a consultant and instructor by business, industry, and educational agencies, including the Cisco Networking Academy.
Allan Roth, visiting lecturer in Computer Science, earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1977 and has 15 years experience as a health informatics professional. His positions have included NIH Health Informatics Fellow at the University of Missouri Health Sciences Center and online instructor at UIS.
Judith Sage, associate professor of Accountancy, received her Ph.D. in Tax Accounting from Oklahoma State University-Stillwater in 1987. She is a CPA and has taught at various institutions including the University of Nebraska, University of Illinois at Chicago, and North Dakota State, Michigan State, and Governors State universities. Her professional interests include taxation, teaching methodologies for accounting, and the accounting curriculum.
Pamela Salela is assistant professor of Library Instructional Services and coordinator of the Nonprofit Resource Center located in Brookens Library. She received her M.S. in Library and Information Science in 1999 and an M.A. in Educational Policy Studies in 1996, both degrees from UIUC. She has served as a reference librarian and library instruction coordinator at St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, and as academic resident librarian at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Her research interests include issues relating to information literacy, diversity, and technology.
Carol Saltsgaver joins UIS as a clinical instructor in the Mathematics program and in the Center for Teaching and Learning. She earned an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma in 1997 and has extensive teaching experience with a wide range of students, from the remedial to gifted, and at all age levels. Most recently she was a mathematics instructor at the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics.
Peter Shapinsky, assistant professor of History, will focus on East Asian history at UIS. He earned the Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan in 2005 and has been a Fulbright Dissertation scholar as well as a research scholar at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo. His specialization is premodern Japan and China and his research interests focus on East Asian maritime history, including nautical technology, trade relations, piracy, and warrior women.
Holly Thompson, assistant professor of Human Development Counseling, earned the Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Counseling at Idaho State University in 2004. Her teaching at UIS will be focused within the HDC program’s community counseling concentration. She was previously a lecturer and supervised beginning counseling students at the University of North Texas and she has been a counselor and caseworker with various family and social service agencies. Her professional interests include multicultural competence in counseling practice.
Te-Wei Wang, assistant professor of Management Information Systems, received his Ph.D. in Production/Operation Management and Management Information Systems from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2001. He comes to UIS from the Department of Decision Science and Information Systems at Florida International University. His professional interests include systems analysis and design, database management, and electronic commerce.
Yifeng Zhang, assistant professor of Management Information Systems, is a Ph.D. candidate in Management Information Systems at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His teaching interests include e-commerce, management information systems, and business intelligence. His research interests include agent-based modeling, e-business, and supply chain management.
