Tammy Craig, interim director of UIS’ Career Services Center, explained that distance counseling is an approach that takes the best practices of traditional counseling and adapts them for delivery to clients through technology-assisted techniques, such as telecounseling, secure e-mail, chat, videoconferencing, or computerized software programs.

“Distance counseling methods can help a counselor reach a greater number of individuals who need assistance,” said Craig. “Research shows that institutions are engaging in more and more e-mail and telephone exchanges with students and alumni, and the need for distance services is growing.”

To recognize this special skill, the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc., an NBCC affiliate, has established a new credential for counselors and those working in the helping professions, the Distance Credentialed Counselor.

The workshop will help counselors understand how to: use technology-assisted techniques to establish a meaningful counseling relationship with clients; use distance counseling techniques in a way that fosters an effective structuring of counseling sessions; bring their clients to closure and help them deal with the termination of the distance counseling process while providing strategies for re-establishing contact, if necessary; apply ethical guidelines and standards relevant to their respective fields of practice; and design and implement appropriate plans for difficult situations such as technical breakdowns, protecting client confidentiality, or emergency/crisis situations.

Persons interested in attending the workshop should have an earned master’s degree in counseling or a related mental health field from a regionally accredited college or university, and be licensed to practice counseling or a related field or be certified as a National Certified Counselor. However, those who do not meet the licensure/certification requirement can still participate and will have up to five years to satisfy the requirement.

Fifteen continuing education hours are awarded for successful completion of this training. ReadyMinds is an NBCC-approved continuing education provider.

The cost for attending the workshop only is $515; the fee for attending the workshop and receiving CE credit is $595. Those who register by August 21 will receive a $75 discount; registrants by September 21 will receive a $50 discount. Student discounts are also available, as are group rates for institutions and organizations that send three or more counselors.
