Prominent scholar of public administration to speak at UIS

August 31, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - The University of Illinois at Springfield’s Department of Public Administration will host a presentation by Dr. Mary Ellen Guy on “Building Civil Society:  Who is Principal?  Who is Agent?” at noon Thursday, September 9, in Brookens Auditorium, located on the lower level of Brookens Library on the UIS campus.  The lecture and a reception immediately following are free and open to the public.  

Currently the Jerry Collins Eminent Scholar, Askew School of Public Administration and Policy at Florida State University, Guy serves as editor-in-chief of the Review of Public Personnel Administration, the premier journal in public sector human resource management, and is past chair of the Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation, the accrediting body for academic master’s degree programs in public affairs in this country. She is also a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and past president of the American Society for Public Administration as well as past president of the Southern Political Science Association and past chair of the Southeastern Conference on Public Administration (SECoPA). 

Guy is a sought-after lecturer and author, with four books and over a hundred articles on subjects related to public management to her credit.  Her recent work has focused on the changing workplace and the difference that gender makes.

She is the recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Scholarship Award in Public Sector Human Resources, given by ASPA’s Section on Personnel Administration and Labor Relations, and the  2003 Donato Pugliese Award, given by the SECoPA for lifetime contributions to the profession.
