Woodcuts exhibit to open fall season at UIS Visual Arts GalleryAugust 24, 2004SPRINGFIELD - “Joel Feldman: Woodcuts 1985-2003,” the opening event of the fall season, will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Illinois at Springfield from September 1 through 30. The gallery will host an evening with the artist on Thursday, September 9, beginning with a talk at 5 p.m. followed by a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The talk, reception, and exhibit are free and open to the public. “As a medium, the woodcut technique has a directness in both making and in look that function as a necessary counterpoint to the complexity of the imagery,” says Feldman. One of the foremost contemporary printmakers, he has participated in numerous solo and group shows in this country and abroad and is represented in the collections of several institutions including the Brooklyn Museum and the Portland Art Museum. He is the recipient of a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and two Artist Grants from the Illinois Arts Council. Feldman is currently a professor at Southern Illinois University’s School of Art and Design. The Visual Arts Gallery is located in room 201 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For further information, contact Emily Laverty at 206-6506. |
