Public invited to join UIS music ensembles for fall

August 12, 2004

SPRINGFIELD - Members of the community who would like to share their musical talents are invited to join any of the five campus ensembles at the University of Illinois at Springfield currently gearing up for the fall 2004 semester. Auditions are not required to join the UIS Chorus, Band, World Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, or Native American Flute Circle – some of which are also offered for academic credit.

The five groups were launched by Sharon Graf, assistant professor of ethnomusicology, when she joined the UIS faculty in fall 2001 to teach the music part of UIS’ Capital Scholars curriculum.  Said Graf, “Before that, there had been no musical performance opportunities on this campus for over twenty years.

“When I arrived on campus, I sent out announcements asking musicians to contact me with their interests and ideas.  The response was plentiful, as you can see by the array of offerings we now have,” she said, adding that each group works on a variety of repertory tailored to the group at hand.

In addition to performances by individual ensembles, each semester UIS Music presents two major concerts -- a brown-bag concert at mid-semester and a finale concert at the end of the semester.

Rehearsals for fall begin the week of August 23; to join a group, stop by at any of the rehearsal times listed below. All rehearsals are held in room 208 of the Health and Sciences Building on the UIS campus. During the first week, rehearsals are informal and refreshments will be served.

The UIS Chorus has performed music ranging from 16th-century madrigals to Broadway tunes at venues including the Springfield Festival of Trees, the UIS Talent Expo, the spring finale concert, and UIS commencement ceremonies.  The chorus rehearses on Tuesdays from 7 to 9:15 p.m. and/or on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students who wish to take this class for academic credit should enroll in MUS 301 Vocal Music Ensemble.

The UIS Band, open to anyone who plays a musical instrument, performs at campus activities such as basketball games. Jazz trumpeter Brian Pryor directs the band and small combos. A music computer lab is available to assist with band performance. Rehearsals are scheduled for Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. Students who wish to take this class for academic credit should enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.

The UIS World Percussion Ensemble is a performance group for students interested in hand drumming using percussion instruments of primarily African and Middle Eastern origin. No experience is necessary to join. The percussion ensemble meets from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Students who wish to take this class for academic credit should enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.

UIS Music has joined with the Central Illinois Flute Circle to sponsor monthly meetings of the UIS Native American Flute Circle, from 7 to 9 p.m. on the second Monday of every month, beginning in September. (Not offered for academic credit.)

The UIS Chamber Ensemble, open to anyone who plays a string instrument, performs music ranging from Renaissance to modern The chamber ensemble rehearses on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students who wish to take this class for academic credit should enroll in MUS 305 Instrumental Music Ensemble.
