WUIS/WIPA launches children’s web page

SPRINGFIELD – The children’s department at Springfield’s Lincoln Library has teamed up with central Illinois authors and WUIS volunteers to record a wide range of books for children to enjoy with the click of a mouse at http://wuis.org/kids.html.

The WUIS Kids web page features books of interest for preschoolers and grade school children. New stories will be added every month. This online storytelling project began in response to requests from listeners wanting children’s stories read by experienced storytellers. Instead of a single broadcast time, the WUIS Kids web page allows a child to listen anytime. Kids are encouraged to vote for their favorite stories.

Additional featured material on the web page is from Classroom Radio (an educational partnership between National Public Radio and Bigchalk.com). Children, parents, and educators can also find current news stories in text and audio form, along with related questions, activities, and lesson plans. WUIS’ Music in the Schools program, classical music features, and jazz features are also highlighted.

Future activities on the web page include a children’s art gallery, “The Art of Sound,” a look at “Today in Music History,” downloadable coloring pages on arts subjects, and other interactive music and literary projects.
