UIS online Computer Science program ranked amongbest buys” in national survey

April 28, 2005

SPRINGFIELD – The Online Computer Science program at the University of Illinois at Springfield was rated fourth in a recent national survey of “Top 20 Best Buys” conducted by GetEducated.com, the only consumer-oriented, online degree clearinghouse in the country. The biennial survey looks at tuition costs at accredited, distance-learning computer science and information systems degree programs nationwide.

The survey, the only one of its kind, identified several trends in online degree pricing that directly impact consumers as they go online to earn degrees.

The number one spot in the survey went to East Carolina University (North Carolina) with a cost of $3,270 for an online master’s degree in Industrial Technology. UIS’ bachelor of science program, at number four, costs $5,690. The most expensive online computer science degree was offered at just over $47,000 by New York University, a private college. The survey revealed the average cost of an online degree in computer science from a regionally accredited university to be $18,395.

Ray Schroeder, UIS professor emeritus, director of the UIS Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning, and a faculty associate with U of I Online, said, “This is a well-deserved designation for the online Computer Science program!  Certainly, the combined quality of our faculty members and the curriculum at e-tuition rates makes this a ‘best buy’ for prospective students around the world.”

GetEducated CEO and chief analyst Vicky Phillips noted, “College costs at residential programs have skyrocketed in the last decade; however, the same is not true for online degree programs.”  She added that eight of the survey’s top ten “best buys” came from publicly funded institutions.

UIS’ online Computer Science program admits students in groups of 20 each fall and spring semester.  Students develop an understanding of the fundamental skills and core theories of computer science and, on completion, are prepared for careers or graduate studies in computer science or related fields.

Besides the B.S. in Computer Science, UIS offers six other degree programs completely online, including a master of science in Management Information Systems; a master of arts in Teacher Leadership; and bachelor of arts in Liberal Studies, English, History, and Philosophy. A fully online graduate certificate in Career Specialist Studies and an online secondary (grades 6-12) math certification degree are also available. In addition, UIS offers many individual courses online.
